Intel has 2006 in the context of the Intel Developer forum jumps in San Francisco communicated that the new processor architecture of the enterprise on the name Core Mikroarchitektur will hear. Also on the CeBIT Intel bring along and surprised first prototypes with first bench mark.

On the innovations of coming core architecture we reported our expectations already in the past several times and with each message rose. While new architecture in particular in the Desktop and server range the current consumption on moderate 65 respectively 80 Watts lowers, it continues the trend of Pentium m architecture in the Notebook segment. The next Notebook chip with the code name Merom likewise a consistent advancement at the beginning of January of the presented dual core processor Yonah (label name core duo and core solo one) set on this architectureand represent. Beside the 64-Bit-Erweiterung EM64T will Merom in the largest version one on 4 MT doubled L2-Cache and further optimizations in the pipeline to offer.

Which all these optimizations bring, Intel demonstrated on the CeBIT on the basis two Notebooks of the company Dell identical with the exception of the processor. The Merom prototype was operated with a clock by 2,16 GHz, the clock of the Yonah system (core duo) amounted to likewise 2.16 GHz. The size of the L2-Caches of the Merom system could not be determined against it with usual programs. It is to be assumed however it concerned a model with 4 MT. As application ID software Quake 4 with the current Patch 1,05 beta 2 was consulted, which offers special optimizations for dual core processors. The results are impressing.

With same clock the next generation is faster and used up by Intels Notebook processor almost 20 per cent thereby no more river than the current Yonah processor the Thermal Design power will remain with the dual core chip despite improved performance values with 31 Watts. The new chip is to be introduced in the second half of this yearly. While the products for Desktops (Conroe) and small 2-Wege-Server (Woodcrest) in the third quarter this yearly is to appear, the Merom is to only come in the fourth quarter on the market.

In addition we had to accomplish the possibility another bench mark on that Merom prototypes, were however asked not to publish this measured value. However we would not like to conceal that the 2.16 GHz Merom are superior in this test to that 2.6 GHz Athlon 64 FX-60.

:p
