The Battle

To summarise:

255MHz 2-2-2-5 is about on par with 280MHz 2.5-3-3-6

270MHz 2-2-2-5 and above would be the ideal but is a rare occurence.

312MHz 2.5-3-3-6 is another ideal but has occured on several occasions, at least 312MHz 2.5-4-3-8 is quite attainable.

My personal recommendation is this. Should you be on a budget, get some cheap Winbond UTTs and run them at 250MHz 2-2-2-5. They should be more than sufficient for everyday work and gameplay and personnally, I do feel the system is "spiffier" and more responsive which is illustrated in some sense by the Everest Latency test. The only drawback is the requirement for relatively high voltage.

However, if you want flexibility and have some spare cash, go for Samsung TCCD/5s. These give you the option to run tight timings of 2-2-2-5 up to 220MHz if you are not interested in overclocking, or running 280MHz 2.5-3-3-6 (thereabouts) and higher should you choose the overclocking path. An added benefit is that most motherboards would be able to run these sticks without any issues due to their conservative RAM voltage requirements in comparison to the Winbond UTTs.
