Monkeys experience 'sunk costs' just like humans when playing videos games and will spend seven times longer trying to beat a level rather than just moving on

Capuchin monkeys and rhesus macaques were taught how to play a video game

They had to move a cursor onto a moving target, and keep it there

Even when too much time had gone by to get a reward, the monkeys kept at it

They spent 7 times longer than they should've, rather than move to the next level

Researchers say that shows the 'sunk cost' effect has an evolutionary basis

Rhesus macaques trained to move a cursor onto a moving target to get a treat kept trying to win the same one level, even though they had a better chance at a reward if they started over on a new round.
